Removal, installation and check of serviceability of functioning of the thermostat

Do not open a cover of a radiator and do not remove the thermostat before complete cooling of the engine! See also prevention at the beginning of the section Antifreeze - general information.

Removal

Petrol models

Models with SOHC engines

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
  2. Empty cooling system (see. Head Routine maintenance).

If are not going to fill in new liquid in system, keep merged for the subsequent use.

  1. Remove air purifier assembly with air lines (see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  2. Weaken fixing collars and disconnect the top hose of a radiator from a cover established on the right on a head of cylinders of the thermostat.
  3. Remove a gas-distributing belt of a drive of GRM with an intermediate roller, a cogwheel of a camshaft and a back cover of a drive of GRM.
  1. Turn out fixing bolts and uncover the thermostat.
  1. Take the thermostat from the case, remove a sealing ring, - try to remember the adjusting provision of components.

Models with DOHC engines

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery (see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  2. Empty cooling system (see. Head Routine maintenance).

If are not going to fill in new liquid in system, keep merged for the subsequent use.

  1. Weaken fixing collars and disconnect the top hose of a radiator from a thermostat cover.

On l models 1.4 and 1.6 the cover is established on the case, privernuty by bolts to the right side of the engine. On l models 1.8 and 2.0 the cover fastens directly to a head of cylinders, - here it is necessary to disconnect one more small hose.

  1. On engines of 1.8 l disconnect electroconducting from the sensor of temperature established on the case of the thermostat.
  1. Turn out fixing bolts and remove the case together with the thermostat built in it.

    B — the Casing of the thermostat of the engine of 1.8 l of DOHC

  1. On engines 1.4 and 1.6 of l remove a sealing ring. On engines of 2.0 l the cover is established on laying, on engines of 1.8 l - on hermetic.
  1. At the corresponding complete set on models 1.4 and 1.6 of l disconnect electroconducting from the sensor of temperature and turn out bolts of fastening of the main case of the thermostat to a head of cylinders. Remove laying. If it is required, turn out the sensor from the case.
  1. In case of need on models of 1.8 l turn out the temperature sensor.

Diesel models

Models with engines of 1.7 l

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove the storage battery with a basic arm (see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  2. Cock the parking brake, поддомкратьте the car and establish it on props. At the corresponding complete set remove protection of a case.
  3. Empty cooling system (see. Head Routine maintenance).

If are not going to fill in new liquid in system, keep merged for the subsequent use.

  1. Weaken fixing collars and disconnect the top hose of a radiator from a cover established on the right (SOHC engines) / at the left (DOHC engines) on a head of cylinders of the thermostat.
  1. Turn out fixing bolts and uncover the thermostat the case.
  1. Take the valve of the thermostat (2) of the case and remove a sealing ring.

Models with engines of 2.0 l

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Remove an air purifier, an inlet air line and the sensor of a measuring instrument of weight of air (see. Power supply system).
  2. Cock the parking brake, поддомкратьте the car and establish it on props. At the corresponding complete set remove protection of a case.
  3. Empty cooling system (see. Head Routine maintenance).

If are not going to fill in new liquid in system, keep merged for the subsequent use.

  1. At the corresponding complete set disconnect electroconducting from the thermostat of the sensor of temperature established on the case.
  2. Weaken collars and disconnect from the thermostat case the top and bottom hoses, and also a pumping hose, - the thermostat is established on the right on a head of cylinders.
  3. Turn out fixing bolts and remove the case together with the thermostat built in it. Remove laying.

Check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Before finally affirming as opinion on a thermostat exit out of operation, check level of cooling liquid in system, a condition and effort of a tension of a driving belt (see. Head Routine maintenance), and also serviceability of functioning of a measuring instrument of temperature.
  2. One of the possible reasons of too slow warming up of the engine (according to measuring instrument indications) is thermostat jamming in open situation. Replace the thermostat new.
  3. In case of an overheat of the engine touch a hand the top hose of a radiator. If the hose is not heated up, possibly, the thermostat is jammed in a closed position, blocking circulation of cooling liquid through a radiator. Replace the thermostat.

At all do not maintain the car with the removed thermostat! Feedback of the onboard processor that will lead to increase of toxicity of the fulfilled gases and excessive increase in fuel consumption thus can become torn.

  1. If the top hose is heated up, it means that cooling liquid regularly circulates through a radiator, i.e. the thermostat is open. Address to materials of the Section devoted to diagnostics of malfunctions of system of cooling (see. Diagnostics of malfunctions).
  2. Thermostat check on a workbench gives the most exact results.
  3. Remove the thermostat from the engine (see. Head Engine).
  1. Tie up to thermostat assembly a piece of a wire and lower it in the capacity filled with water. There lower the thermometer.

Track, that the thermometer and the thermostat did not adjoin to walls and a capacity bottom!

  1. Start to warm up slowly water, watching change of indications of the thermometer, - operation of the valve of the thermostat should occur in strict accordance with requirements of Specifications.
  1. Estimate size of complete opening of the valve, - the nominal rate makes b - and = 8 mm.

Installation

Installation is carried out in return sequence. Pay attention to the next moments.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Carefully smooth out interfaced surfaces and replace sealing elements / hermetic.
  2. Place the thermostat in a casing, it is correct it сориентировав.
  3. With demanded effort tighten bolts of fastening of a cover.
  4. Restore initial connection of all hoses and electroconducting (where it is required, establish into place removed sensors).
  5. Fill in in system cooling liquid (see. Head Routine maintenance).
  6. Start the engine, warm up to working temperature and be convinced of absence of leaks
