Diagnostics of malfunctions

The description of diagnostics of electronic control systems and diagnostic codes are provided in Head engine Electric equipment.

In this section the simplest scheme of clarification of the reasons of malfunctions and the refusals occurring in knots and systems of a vehicle is offered. Refusals and their possible reasons are broken into groups on the basis of the relation to certain components or car systems, such as the engine, cooling system, etc., besides, in the text references to Chapters and the sections concerning these problems are given.

Remember that the successful conclusion of search of causes of defect at all is not the black magic available to only skilled professional mechanics, and is defined by a combination of a certain knowledge and a patient, systematic approach to problem research. To move always follows from simple to difficult, to lead up each check to the logic end and to try not to pass the obvious facts — everyone can forget to fill fuel in a fuel tank or to leave for the night included lighting devices.

And at last, always it is necessary to try to make an accurate picture of development of malfunction and to undertake the corresponding steps on recurrence prevention. If refusal of electric equipment was the result of violation of quality of contact, check at the same time a condition of all other contacts and electric sockets of system. If the same safety lock several times in a row continues to fuse, there is no sense in its further replacement — it is necessary to try to find out a cause of failure. Remember that failure of a minor component can be a sign of violation of functioning of more important knot or the whole system.

Engine

If the engine is not started, it is necessary to analyse a situation. That the engine in general could be started, should be satisfied two main conditions. In cylinders the air and fuel mix should arrive, and on a spark plug the spark should be developed. Therefore, first, it is necessary to check, whether fuel moves. As thus it is necessary to operate, it is described in Head of the Power supply system and release.

To define, whether the spark is developed, it is necessary to turn out candles, to insert into tips and separately to put to weight. Thus a tip or a cable of ignition do not hold hands, and use well isolated nippers. Ask the assistant to start the engine. If the spark is absent, define a cause of failure, being guided by Head engine Electric equipment.

Procedures of diagnostics of an electronic control system and codes of malfunctions are given in Head engine Electric equipment.

The engine is not turned in attempts of its start

  1. Corrosion of plugs of the battery takes place or weakened fastening of tips of wires on them. Check a condition of plugs and tips. Tighten terminal clips, if necessary remove corrosion traces.
  2. The battery is discharged or faulty. If tips of wires are found pure and reliably fixed on battery plugs, turn the ignition key in the situation ON, then include headlights and/or windscreen cleaners. If this electric equipment does not function, the battery is discharged.
  3. Transmission it is inexact it is established in the situation "R" (AT) or on neutral transfer (RKPP), or coupling is not squeezed completely out.
  4. Conducting in a chain of system of start is torn off or weakened fastening of wires on plugs. Check a condition of wires, plugs and electric sockets of the battery, the traction relay of a starter and the ignition lock.
  5. The gear wheel of a starter is jammed in a gear wreath of a flywheel. On the models equipped with RKPP, establish it on transfer and, ceilings manually the car, turn that its engine. At the first possibility remove a starter and check a condition of a gear wheel and a gear wreath of a flywheel.
  6. The traction relay of a starter (is faulty see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  7. The starter (is faulty see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  8. The ignition lock is faulty.

The engine is turned, but not started

Petrol engine

  1. Start is incorrectly made.

Order of start of the petrol engine

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

Cock the parking brake, squeeze out a coupling pedal. On models from AT press and hold a brake pedal. On AT establish the selector in the situation "R" or "N". Do not squeeze out an accelerator. Turn the ignition key and hold, while the engine will not be started. If the engine is not started within 20 seconds, or глохнет right after start, repeat start process at half squeezed-out pedal of gas. As soon as the engine will be started, release the ignition key.

On a frost below – 15°С and at height more than 1000 m above sea level start spend not less than 10 seconds with half squeezed-out pedal. Surely at once begin movement. In frosty weather let's to the engine get warm within at least 30 seconds. If the engine is not started, in 10 seconds, interrupt start and repeat attempt in 30 seconds.

Some unsuccessful attempts of start in a row can damage the catalytic converter since not burned down fuel vzryvoobrazno burns down when heating in a working element of the converter.

Only on the hot engine: after start add a little gas.

  1. The engine immobilizator is faulty or is not disconnected.
  2. The safety lock of the electric fuel pump / electronic system of injection (is faulty see. Head Onboard electric equipment).
  3. Empty fuel tank or poor-quality fuel is filled in.
  4. The air filter is strongly polluted. Leakages of vacuum in elements of supply of air, malfunction in a control system of injection of fuel and ignition take place.
  5. The battery (the engine is turned too slowly) is discharged. Check electric equipment functioning (see above).
  6. Terminal connections of the battery are oxidized, or weakened their fastening (see above).
  7. The fuel pump is faulty, fused its safety lock, or the pump relay is damaged. Check aurally serviceability of functioning of the pump at ignition inclusion (see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  8. Components of system of ignition (are damaged or excessively humidified see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  9. Spark plugs are worn-out or faulty, or the candle gap (is incorrectly exposed see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  10. Conducting of an electric contour of system of start is torn off or disconnected, or weakened fastening of wires on plugs (see above).
  11. Conducting of a contour of the coil of ignition is torn off or disconnected, or weakened fastening of wires on coil plugs (see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  12. The control unit safety lock by the engine, the pulse sensor, the sensor of temperature of cooling liquid or soaked-up air (is damaged see. Head Onboard electric equipment).
  13. Kompressionny pressure fell. Replace sealing laying of a head of cylinders, in case of need execute regenerative repair of the engine.

Diesel engine

  1. Start is incorrectly made.

Order of start of the turbodiesel engine

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

On the cold engine and at external temperature below +8°С tighten the parking brake, squeeze out a coupling pedal. On AT establish the selector in the situation "R" or "N". Turn the ignition key in situation II and wait, the control lamp of preheat will not go out yet. At once after the control lamp will go out, start the engine, without giving some gas. If there are irregular flashes, do not switch off a starter until the engine will not earn evenly (no more than 30 seconds). If the engine is not started, through a floor of minute again repeat start as it is described above.

In the course of preheat of the engine, it is not necessary to include consumers of a current (light, heating of back glass).

On the cold engine and at external temperature above +8°С, and also at the warm engine preheat is not required. The engine can be started at once. It is not necessary to give gas.

  1. The engine immobilizator is faulty
  2. The safety lock of the electric fuel pump, or preheat system (is faulty see. Head Onboard electric equipment).
  3. Serviceability of functioning of system of preheat is broken.
  4. There is no tension on the electromagnetic locking valve. Connect to the switch the voltmeter or a sampler on a light-emitting diode. Include ignition — the light-emitting diode should light up. Otherwise it is necessary to check electroconducting of the corresponding chain on break. In case of need make the corresponding regenerative repair.
  5. The electromagnetic locking valve is faulty. Check reliability of fastening of the electromagnetic switch, check contacts. Switch on and off ignition — in the switch click should be distributed.
  6. Damage to the line of supply of fuel, or air hit to the fuel highway takes place:
  • Toplivoprovodny lines are mechanically damaged or littered. Check passableness of lines, clean топливопроводы, remove from a path, including the filter air jams;
  • The fuel filter is littered. Replace filtering element;
  • In the winter it is necessary to check the filter and топливопроводы on existence of signs of formation of ice or paraffin. Put the car in heated garage, add in a power supply system a little gasoline;
  • The path ventilation of a fuel tank or the mesh filter of a toplivozabornik is littered. Check, clean the respective lines.
  1. Adjustment of the beginning of supply of fuel is brought down. Check, make the corresponding adjustment.
  2. Nozzles are faulty. Check. Unscrew consistently cap nuts — at an otvorachivaniye of a nut of the faulty cylinder turns of the engine will not fall.
  3. The fuel pump of a high pressure (TNVD) is faulty. Establish for check new, or obviously serviceable TNVD.

Start of the hot engine is complicated

  1. Passableness of the air filter (is broken see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  2. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (takes place see. Heads of the Power supply system and release and engine Electric equipment).
  3. Fuel does not reach injectors of system of injection (see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  4. Installation of phases of a gazoraspredeleniye of the diesel engine is broken.
  5. Kompressionny pressure (the petrol engine) / fell TNVD adjustment (the diesel engine) is broken.

Starter input in gearing with a flywheel wreath / a driving disk is complicated, or is accompanied by extraneous sounds

  1. Teeths of a gear wheel of a starter or flywheel wreath are worn-out or damaged.
  2. Bolts of fastening of a starter are lost or weakened effort of their tightening.
  3. Internal damage of a starter takes place. Replace a starter.

The engine глохнет right after start

  1. The engine immobilizator is faulty.
  2. Electroconducting is faulty, or weakened fastening of wires on plugs of the coil of ignition or the generator.
  3. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (takes place see. Heads of the Power supply system and release and engine Electric equipment).
  4. Base installations of the block of electronic control (ESM) are broken.
  5. Damage to release system / the catalytic converter takes place.
  6. Depression losses through prokladochny surfaces of the inlet pipeline or the throttle case take place. Make sure of reliability of a tightening of fixing bolts/nuts, check the fact and quality of fastening on the unions on the inlet pipeline of all vacuum hoses. Check a condition of hoses and correctness of their connection (to the unions).
  7. Air (diesel engines) got to a power supply system.

Stability of single turns of the engine is broken

All engines

  1. Depression losses take place. Make sure of reliability of a tightening of fixing bolts/nuts, check the fact and quality of fastening on the unions on the inlet pipeline of all vacuum hoses. Hear to the working engine by means of a stethoscope or a piece of a fuel hose — existence of a hissing sound will allow to reveal a "leak" source.

It is possible to use for check by solution of soap water not less effectively.

  2. Passableness of the valve of system of operated ventilation of a case (PCV) (is broken see. Head Engine).
  3. Passableness of the air filter (is broken see. Head of the Power supply system and release).

  5. Leaks through laying of a head of cylinders take place. Make measurement of kompressionny pressure in engine cylinders.
  6. Working ledges of cams of a camshaft (are worn-out see. Head Engine).
  7. The gas-distributing belt is incorrectly established, or weakened effort of its tension (see. Heads Routine maintenance and Engine).

Diesel engines

  1. Quality of connections of fuel hoses on TNVD and the fuel filter is broken. Replace fuel hoses, fix them collars, tighten screws of angular connections.
  2. TNVD fastening is mechanically damaged or weakened. Check, tighten fixture.
  3. Are mixed by junctions of lines of giving and fuel return. Make the corresponding corrections.

Sometimes the screw of shtutserny connection of the returnable line is marked by "OUT" inscription.

  1. The line of supply of fuel is damaged:
  • Toplivoprovodny lines are mechanically damaged or littered. Check passableness of lines, clean топливопроводы, remove from a path, including the filter air jams;
  • The fuel filter is littered. Replace filtering element;

  12. Serviceability of functioning of a power supply system (is broken see. Head of the Power supply system and release).

Engine spontaneously глохнет

  1. Adjustment of turns of idling is broken.
  2. Passableness of the fuel filter is broken or power supply system pollution (takes place see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  3. Air (diesel engines) got to fuel system.
  4. Passableness of a path of system of ventilation of a fuel tank is broken.
  5. Refusal of components of a power supply system or information sensors (takes place see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  6. Components of systems of decrease in toxicity of the fulfilled gases are faulty.
  7. Spark plugs are faulty or polluted, or the candle gap (is incorrectly exposed see. Head Routine maintenance). Also check a condition of candle wires (see. Head engine Electric equipment).

The engine does not develop full capacity

All engines

  2. Passableness of an air purifier is broken. Clean, or replace the air filter.
  3. Spark plugs are faulty, or the candle gap (is incorrectly exposed see. Head Routine maintenance).
  4. The ignition coil (is faulty see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  5. There does not correspond to requirements of Specifications ATF level (see. Heads Operation manual and Automatic transmission).
  6. Coupling (revolves see. Head Coupling and power shafts).
  7. Passableness of the fuel filter is broken or power supply system pollution (takes place see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  8. Fuel not that grade is filled. Fill in in a tank fuel with the demanded octane number.
  9. The adjusting valve of a turbokompressor is damaged.
  10. Low kompressionny pressure in all, or in separate cylinders. Make the compression measurement which analysis of results allows to reveal existence of leakages of valves and/or violation of tightness of laying of a head of cylinders (see. Head Engine).
  11. The gas-distributing belt is incorrectly established, or weakened effort of its tension (see. Heads Routine maintenance and Engine).
  12. Brakes "are taken".
  13. Coupling (models with RKPP) (revolves see. Head Coupling and power shafts).

Diesel engines

  1. The air purifier is littered. Clear or replace.
  2. Uniformity of distribution of fuel from TNVD to cylinders is broken. Check, make the corresponding adjustment on the heated-up engine.
  3. The moment of the beginning of supply of TNVD fuel is incorrectly exposed. Check, make the corresponding adjustment.
  4. The fuel filter, TNVD, or any of nozzles is littered. Wash out the preliminary filter, replace an element of the filter of thin cleaning, clean a spray or replace a pump / nozzle.
  5. Adjustment of the maximum frequency of rotation of a cranked shaft is broken.

There are cottons in system of an admission or shots in release system

  1. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (takes place see. Heads of the Power supply system and release and engine Electric equipment).
  2. Defect in a secondary contour of system of ignition (destruction of insulators of spark plugs or defects of candle wires) (takes place see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  3. Supply of fuel to injectors to injections/nozzles (is broken see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  4. The system of injection of fuel needs adjustment, or its components (are excessively worn-out see. Head of the Power supply system and release).
  5. Depression losses on the throttle case, the inlet pipeline or through vacuum hoses (see stability single обротов the engine above Is broken) take place.
  6. Valves (are jammed see. Head Engine).
  7. The order of connection of candle wires (is broken see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  8. The gas-distributing belt is incorrectly established, or weakened effort of its tension (see. Heads Routine maintenance and Engine).
  9. At movement with acceleration or uphill there are detonation sounds
  10. In a fuel tank fuel of poor quality is filled in.
  11. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (takes place see. Heads of the Power supply system and release and engine Electric equipment).
  12. Spark plugs not that type are established. Check candles and coils on existence of damages (see. Head engine Electric equipment).
  13. Base installations of the block of electronic control are broken.
  14. The detonation sensor is faulty.
  15. Depression losses (see stability single обротов the engine above Is broken) take place.

Kalilny ignition (the engine continues to work after ignition switching off) takes place

  1. Idling turns (are excessively high see. Head Engine).
  2. Malfunction of components of a power supply system or electric equipment (takes place see. Head the Electric equipment of the engine and below the Engine continues to work after ignition switching off).
  3. The valve of a purge of a coal adsorber of system of catching of fuel evaporations (EVAP) is damaged.
  4. The working temperature of the engine is excessively high. The possible reasons of this violation can be decrease in level of a cooler (see. The head of System of cooling, heating), failure of the thermostat, blocking of a radiator or violation of serviceability of functioning of the water pump (see. Head of System of cooling, heating).
  5. The excessive nagaroobrazovaniye in chambers of combustion of the engine (takes place see. Head Engine).
  6. The working temperature of the engine is excessively high.
  7. The locking electromagnetic valve (the diesel engine) (is faulty see. Head of the Power supply system and release).

The exhaust of the diesel engine is filled excessively with smoke

Black smoke:

  1. The air purifier is polluted. Blow or replace an element;
  2. In a tank inappropriate fuel is filled. Wash out a tank and replace fuel;
  3. The moment of the beginning of giving of TNVD is incorrectly established.

Dark blue smoke:

  1. Oil hit in combustion chambers owing to wear of piston rings, high level of oil in an air purifier, wear of epiploons in covers of a turbokompressor, formation of thinnesses in laying between a block case and a turbokompressor takes place. Repair the engine, establish normal level of oil, replace epiploons, tighten bolts of fastening of a turbokompressor or replace laying;
  2. Supply of fuel to one of nozzles is broken. Check on heating of final branch pipes of a collector;
  3. Quality of dispersion of fuel by a nozzle because of malfunction of the valve or spray break is broken. Grind in the valve or replace a nozzle.

White or brown smoke:

  1. Cooling liquid does not get warm to normal working temperature. Check serviceability of functioning of the thermostat;
  2. Serviceability of functioning of nozzles is broken owing to wear or spray damage. Replace a spray.

Noise, smells and the vibrations arising in the course of functioning of the engine

During acceleration or at increase of load of the engine there are the knocks caused by too early ignition or a detonation

  1. For filling of the car nizkooktanovy gasoline was used. Fill in in a fuel tank qualitative fuel.
  2. Installation of a corner of an advancing of ignition is broken. Check a condition of the corresponding information sensors and other components of system of ignition / engine management. Replace defective units.
  3. It is faulty, or the detonation sensor is too poorly tightened. Violation of effort of a tightening of the sensor can lead to delay of ignition and, as a result, decrease in capacity developed by the engine. Estimate a sensor condition, check effort of its tightening, in case of need make replacement.
  4. Non-standard spark plugs are established. Replace candles, track correctness of installation of interelectrode gaps.

At car operation in a high-speed mode it is better to establish "colder" candles.

  1. The excessive nagaroobrazovaniye in combustion chambers takes place. Use special additives to fuel, or make dismantling and a dekarbonizatsiya of a head of cylinders.
  2. Serviceability of functioning of system of food / engine management is broken. Check a condition of the corresponding information sensors and management modules. Replace defective components.
  3. Passableness of a path of system of production of the fulfilled gases is broken. Examine system components on existence of deformations and other mechanical defects. Compare temperature on an entrance and on an exit of the catalytic converter and the exhaust silencer — if the temperature of an entering stream much more surpasses temperature of the corresponding component leaving, therefore, passableness is broken.

At operation of the engine there is a high-frequency squeal or whistle

  1. Belts of a drive of auxiliary units are worn-out, or weakened effort of their tension. Check, make necessary adjustment, replace worn-out belts.
  2. Bearings of natyazhitel of auxiliary belts are worn-out or jammed. Check natyazhitel, in case of need make replacement of components.
  3. The water pump is faulty. The pump can not give leaks that does not exclude probability of wear of the bearing or weakening of landing/jamming of rotors. Replace the pump.

At operation of the engine there is a metal gnash

  1. The water pump is faulty, or weakened bolts of its fastening. Check effort of a tightening of fixture, replace the faulty pump.
  2. Bearings of natyazhitel of auxiliary belts are worn-out or jammed. Check natyazhitel, in case of need make replacement of components.

In operating time of the engine there are different knocks

  1. Serviceability of functioning of hydraulic proof-readers of klapanny gaps in pushers (on models of the corresponding complete set) is broken. Check level and a condition of impellent oil. In case of need replace oil and the oil filter. Check, whether there were a skhlopyvaniye of pushers. Replace defective components. Besides serviceability of functioning of hydraulic pushers depends on pressure of impellent oil — check passableness of the oil filter, a condition of the oil pump and its reduktsionny valve.
  2. On models with manual adjustment of klapanny gaps it is necessary to check installation of the last and to estimate degree of wear of GRM components. In case of need make the corresponding adjustment, replace the failed details.
  3. It is worn-out, or it is incorrectly adjusted a belt / chain of a drive of GRM. Check, execute necessary adjustments, replace defective components of a drive.
